St Andrews Parish: Proposed new elementary at 11800 South 3600 West

This would help with stability of Long Term enrollment of JD and make JD not as dependent on St John’s.

In Depth Discussion Changing Philosophy Behind Giving
Molly brought up her handout of “Progressive Engagement”
Galey mentioned that when events don’t too well like “Dancing in the Streets and “Blissid Union of Souls” perhaps is because there were not enough people involved or “Engaged in the event”. These events were well publicized and the students were given many opportunities for exposure to the events and still they were sparsely attended. If the community feels connected to an event they will come to it.
Ed mentioned that successful events happen when the desired goal is out front. For example the Katrina dinner and the Festival of Roses are all good examples of this.
Jeff Stokes mentioned that we must advertise the need for money and endowments and let the community and the students know that money is needed for a good cause. He suggested better communication.
Galey spoke of communication to enlighten others to our needs and to engage others in our cause.
Carol Frymire mentioned that we need to have good communication between the boards of the middle school and the high school so that when good people are coming up then they are steered to the places that they can help the most.
She also talked about grandparents being a larger source of disposable income and that maybe we should have a grandparent’s day and to make sure we are getting enough information on applications to provide development with sources for funds. Also let people feel included so that what is important for JD becomes important for them and then they want it to succeed.
Student body has to sell the school too and should participate in passing on the message of excellence.
Ed mentioned that as the school gets older then the base will grow too and students that started in elementary are now coming into the high school and we will have some history from them.
Galey cautioned against too much communication between St John’s and JD because we want the freshmen to all feel they are on the same page.
Carol Barmen pointed out that Development directors from all of the schools (like St. Vincent’s) have knowledge of good parents coming up and can communicate this with Molly.
Also the Mentor program is a great place to help get families involved.
Galey mentioned that new parents need help in getting “plugged in” to the school and that this program encourages involvement.
It helps new families to be included and to become participants and then they want to contribute to JD too.
Galey would like to stop equating philanthropy and consumerism and have people give to JD because it is a great institution and not be motivated by what they get if they give this.
Is this product (JD) worth it or not
Is this product and service necessary and worthy
We haven’t made the case with the students and parents that we need the money.
Need to communicate where we are and where we want to be and how this money will help us get there. Colosimo said that he understands that and wants to be able to educate the kids
Message based on excellence
Communicate that we are great and want to stay that way Identify who can give and be like Judge and go after money in every way possible. Be confident and bold, not tepid
Tom Deganaars suggested that we reduce the number of times that we ask for money and help point out the need. Involve people in celebration of community. Have a goal and a way for people to see how we are approaching the goal.
Make sure everyone is on the same page and the Booster Club and H.S.A. all emphasize excellence and give same message. Excellence costs money.
Ron Heinz proposedcx bbvhcbnhhbbcbb br ythchc h nn jjmn bbcvhcv that we need to let people know what are tuition does for us and what it does not cover.
Carol Barman recommended an annual event to create “buzz” over. Don’t change the event each year and give the events time to take hold.
Ed suggested that we coordinate calendars with others asking for money so all of the schools and parishes are not asking for something at the same time.
Get priests involved in talking about the needs of JD and to talk about the fundraising that is happening.
Maybe have an event for the local priests to help communicate needs of JD
Remember to communicate that one in three students are on financial aide.
Have students whose lives have been impacted by JD (alumni) talk about what this school means to them.
Last year there was 2.5 million of financial aide that wasn’t from Skaggs.
Advertise the costs of aide
